Kurt Angle definitely loves to keep the fans guessing. For the past few years, we’ve heard rumor after rumor of Angle returning to WWE for one more run before retirement. He’s very recently been reported to be in the area for past tapings of Raw, pushing speculation that a return is either right around the corner or at least in the works, but he has yet to show up. In a recent interview with The World According To Wrestling, Angle admitted that there will be a time that he will go back to working with Vince McMahon. Things didn’t come together in time for WrestleMania, but we could still see him down the line.
Cageside Seats reported the plans that Angle has for his return to the WWE; a new Team Angle. He stated that he wants to team with American Alpha from NXT; Jason Jordan and Chad Gable. Angle knows that at 47-years-old, wrestling full time is out of the question, but American Alpha could “do the wrestling for me until the big one comes.” The NXT tag team is clearly motivated to move up the roster, and will have a big match at NXT TakeOver during WrestleMania week, so they could benefit from an alignment with an experienced veteran.
WWE may be hesitant to get involved with Angle again due to his legal troubles and substance abuse issues. He failed a steroid test under WWE’s wellness policy due to an expired prescription, and was accused of receiving prescriptions for non-FDA approved anabolic steroids. Angle was arrested in 2007 on a DUI charge after a woman claimed that he almost hit her while leaving a restaurant, then failing a field sobriety test and refusing to submit to a blood test. He was arrested in 2009 for driving on a suspended license, possession (HGH), and harassment. In March 2011, he was arrested for DUI and again failed a field sobriety test. He was arrested again for DUI in September of the same year, and once more in 2013. The last arrest prompted a trip to rehab.
Mistakes are always made and can be forgiven, and based on recent history, Angle seems to have gotten things together. He recently announced on Twitter that he will be in Dallas, Texas on April 2nd for WrestleCon. While this is its own event, it does put Angle very close to the WrestleMania action; NXT Takeover will be the day before and Mania is the day after his appearance. If his return isn’t already being planned, Angle is doing a hell of a job creating enough buzz to push the WWE to want to make it happen. Angle is currently scheduled in June to face current PWG champion, Zack Sabre Jr. in London. WWE isn’t in his immediate future, but we may get to see his return somewhere in the near future.
